Byd to produce Cathode materials for Lithium-ion batteries

Benefiting from the explosive rise of new energy vehicles, not only li-ion battery industry chain companies in the first three quarters of the performance is beautiful, BYD is also planning to establish a lithium project company with Salt Lake Shares.




Lithium-ion batteries are in high demand




Zhitong Finance learned that in the first three quarters of 2016, the production of new energy vehicles was 302,000 and the sales volume was 289,000, up 93.0% and 100.6% year-on-year. Northeast Securities believes that sales of new energy vehicles in 2016 will be 400,000 units, up 41% year-on-year, and sales in 2020 will reach 1.44 million units.




Benefiting from the explosive rise of new energy vehicles, lithium ion battery industry chain companies have also performed well in the first three quarters. At present, lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide are more used in lithium products.




Data in the first quarter of 2016 shows that the domestic 99.9% battery-grade lithium metal price accumulated 49% (battery-grade lithium carbonate +33% in the same period), which rose about 23% in March (battery-grade lithium carbonate +0.59%), lithium market products tilt to lithium carbonate. However, according to the relevant institutions, the average price of battery grade lithium carbonate at the end of July was 149,000 yuan/ton, down about 3.87% from July 1; The average price of industrial-grade lithium carbonate was 125,833 yuan/ton, down nearly 5.03% from July 1.




Cathode material industry said that the use of lithium hydroxide as cathode material (especially ternary materials) has the advantages of stability and consistency, which is the power of lithium ion battery. Although the effective lithium content of lithium hydroxide is lower than lithium carbonate, the current price of lithium carbonate is high, but lithium hydroxide will become an important cathode material base material. At present, the panasonic 18650 battery used by Tesla only uses lithium hydroxide as the raw material for the synthesis of ternary materials.




Byd joint venture to build lithium project company




Zhitong Finance learned that BYD new energy vehicles "7+4" strategic layout, covering many aspects of life. Both the use of its own lithium ion battery and the industry's lithium ion battery demand are in a relatively prosperous stage.




Based on the above considerations, BYD will strengthen in-depth cooperation and exchanges with lithium upstream companies to achieve the company's new energy industry strategic goals. On October 24, BYD announced that it would co-invest with Qinghai Salt Lake Industry and Shenzhen Zhuoyucheng Investment to set up a new company called Qinghai Salt Lake BYD Resource Development Co., LTD. The new company will be dedicated to the development, production and sales of salt Lake lithium resources, mainly producing lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide and other products.




It is reported that the registered capital of the new company is 500 million yuan, among which BYD invested 245 million yuan, holding 49.00%, the new company is expected to start the construction of 30,000 tons of lithium carbonate project. Qinghai Salt Lake Industry will transfer all 51.42% of its existing equity of Qinghai Salt Lake Fozhao Lithium to the new company within 60 working days upon approval by relevant departments.




In addition, BYD said that the strategic cooperation with Qinghai Salt Lake Industry will help promote the company's technology, management, sales network, especially in the power of lithium ion batteries and other aspects of the salt Lake lithium resources to closely combine, give full play to their respective technological innovation capabilities, market development capabilities, to achieve win-win cooperation.
