Ai-da, a British robot painter who was on his way to Egypt for a new exhibition, was detained at an Egyptian airport, the Guardian reported. Reports say the Egyptian government suspected the robot painter of being part of an espionage scheme.
IDA Is in Egypt to take part in a contemporary art exhibition, "Forever Is Now," next to the famous Pyramids of Giza. It is the first time in thousands of years that Egypt has allowed modern art to be displayed alongside the pyramids.
When IDA arrived at an Egyptian airport, Egyptian customs detained her for 10 days, along with her sculpture, because of "security issues." The incident has also caused diplomatic problems between Egypt and Britain. IDA was released hours before the exhibition opened on October 20.
Edin Miller, maker and spokeswoman for The Artist, said it took the British ambassador to Egypt "communication through the night" to free the robot painter and "we were under a lot of pressure". Ada came under suspicion because she had a modem and camera built into her eye for painting, which customs officers suspected was related to an espionage scheme, Miller said. "I can take out the modem, but I can't gouge out her eyes," Miller said.
IDA was built in 2019 by a team of programmers, roboticists, art experts and psychologists. It is named after Ada Lovelace, the world's first programmer, and will be updated with AI (artificial intelligence) technology, according to the report. Her body is covered with silicone and has several built-in cameras. IDA can use AI algorithms to analyze and select images of people, animals and landscapes.
