EWEC issues RfQ for 1.5GW solar project in Abu Dhabi

UAE utility Emirates Water and Electricity Corporation (EWEC) has launched an Application for Qualification (RfQ) for the development of a 1.5 GW solar project in Abu Dhabi.

Located in the UAE's Ajban region, the mega project is expected to generate electricity for approximately 160,000 households per year and supports the UAE's strategy for sustainable development and energy diversification, which aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

In May, EWEC announced an Expression of Interest (EOI) to investigate interest in the project and the acquisition of an ownership stake of up to 40% as part of a tender. The state-owned utility will retain a 60 percent interest in the scheme.

The winner of the auction will be responsible for the financing, construction, operation, maintenance and ownership of the project.

The selected developer will also sign a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with EWEC, which will assume electricity from the park.
