The Southwest Public Power Authority (SPPA) recently said it had signed a power supply contract with 300 MW of solar and 600 MWh of battery storage capacity, the largest renewable energy purchase in the agency’s operating history.
Specifically, SPPA has entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with BrightNight and Cordelio Power's joint venture, which owns the Box Canyon project in Pinal County, Arizona.
The contracted electricity will be supplied to the 21 constituent members of the SPPA. SPPA estimates the Box Canyon facility will meet about one-third of its peak capacity needs and 19% to 21% of its energy needs.
The project has recently reached all major licensing milestones and is expected to begin operations in 2025. It will create more than 200 buildings and 5 permanent O&M jobs.
