In 2022, Germany added 7.18GW of solar energy, 2.14GW of onshore wind power and 342MW of offshore wind power. The net new installed capacity was stronger than that in 2021, but it was still far below the speed required to achieve the 2030 renewable energy target.
According to the data released by the Federal Network Agency, by the end of 2022, Germany's operating solar capacity was 66.49GW. In order to achieve the target of 215GW by 2030, Germany needs to install 1.54GW per month on average.
More than half of the new capacity, about 4.4GW, comes from rooftop projects, and the non-subsidized ground-based solar power station is 746.7MW.
Bavaria has once again become the leader of new solar energy installed capacity, adding 2.09GW in 2022, with a total of 18.3GW at the end of the year. North Rhine-Westphalia ranked second with a net installed capacity of 899.2MW, followed by 794.1MW in Brandenburg.
In terms of onshore wind power, Germany's operating capacity by the end of the year was 58.2GW, and December witnessed the highest monthly growth rate of 309MW. Despite the accelerated development by the end of 2022, the expansion rate must be increased to an average of 591MW per month, so that by the end of this decade, Germany's onshore wind turbines in operation will reach 115GW.
In terms of offshore wind power, as many as 38 offshore wind turbines (342MW in total) were integrated into the German power grid last year, bringing Germany's wind power capacity in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea to 8.12GW.
