The installed capacity of battery energy storage system in the United States will reach 8.8GW in 2022, and it is expected to reach 9.4GW in 2023

According to a survey report released recently by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), it is expected that the installed capacity of battery energy storage systems deployed in the United States in 2023 will double.

In the agency's survey results, it is expected that the installed capacity of solar power generation facilities deployed in the United States in 2023 will account for more than half (54%) of the installed capacity of all new generation power generation facilities (54.5GW). Before that, the U.S. photovoltaic industry experienced a difficult year in 2022. Due to adverse factors such as supply chain disruption, the installed capacity of solar power generation facilities deployed in the United States fell by 23% year on year.

If most or all of the solar power generation facilities delayed in 2022 are completed, the United States may add 29.1GW of solar power generation facilities this year. So far, the strongest year for the growth of the installed capacity of solar power generation in the United States is 2021, with an increase of 13.4GW.

At the same time, the installed capacity of the battery energy storage system deployed in 2022 is about 8.8GW, while it is expected that the United States will deploy 9.4GW of energy storage system by 2023.

California and Texas will be the two states with the largest deployment of solar power generation facilities in 2023, and also the two states with the largest installed capacity of new battery energy storage systems.

About 41% of the new solar power generation facilities in the United States will be deployed in these two states. Driven by this growth, about 71% of the new battery energy storage systems will also be deployed in these two states. Texas will become the region with the highest installed capacity of wind power generation facilities in the United States in 2023, with an estimated increase of 2GW.

The United States Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicts that the installed capacity of battery energy storage systems deployed in the United States will increase from 1.5GW in 2020 to 30GW in 2025. In fact, since October 2022 alone, the installed capacity of battery energy storage system has increased by 1GW.

These predicted figures sound very high, but may not be surprising, because the Energy Information Administration (EIA) found that the installed capacity of the energy storage system deployed in the United States in 2021 has actually doubled compared with the previous year, from 1438 MW in 2020 to 4631 MW, while the installed capacity of 106 new battery energy storage projects is 3202 MW.
