The Energy Storage Alliance of India (IESA) recently released a report titled Energy Storage Development Vision 2030, which predicts that India will need to deploy at least 160GWh of energy storage systems by 2030 to convert its renewable energy by 2030. A target of 500GW of non-fossil fuel energy to integrate into its grid. These energy storage systems will include grid-side energy storage systems, energy storage systems deployed in conjunction with renewable energy generation facilities, energy storage systems in distribution and transmission networks, and energy storage systems that balance grid ancillary services. The report outlines the need for energy storage deployment in India and provides recommendations for government policymakers and private companies to take action to achieve their goals.
The Indian Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) was established 10 years ago by energy consultancy Customized Energy Solutions to advance the development of energy storage, green hydrogen and transportation electrification technologies in India, and has been working closely with government departments.
India's current non-fossil fuel power generation has reached 156.83GW, accounting for 40.1% of total power generation, while the country's peak demand for energy exceeds 200GW as of July 2021.
The energy storage industry in India started late and did not develop until 2018. The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) recently conducted a pilot tender for a 500MW/1000MWh independently deployed energy storage system under a set of guidelines from the Ministry of Electricity of India. And when the penetration rate of renewable energy exceeds 50%, it will provide a unique opportunity to make India a major global energy storage market and a manufacturing center for related technologies.
The Energy Storage Alliance of India (IESA) estimates that 50GWh of new advanced battery (ACC) battery annual production capacity is supported through the Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, and each GWh of production capacity means about 10,000 jobs will be created .
In addition, the energy storage deployment targets set by India will provide momentum and certainty for energy storage project development, deployment, investment in manufacturing and the energy storage industry ecosystem. However, despite the growing installed renewable energy capacity in India, some states are still less motivated to deploy energy storage.
