The materials science world has recently been abuzz with graphene and huawei, a Chinese company.
Since its first artificial production 12 years ago, graphene has become a global effort to bring its promising applications in electronic information, new materials, new energy, biomedicine and other fields into industrial production.
Therefore, when Huawei Central Research Institute Watt Laboratory announced "launch of the industry's first high-temperature and long-life graphene-based lithium ion battery" at the 57th Japan Battery Conference, the domestic scene was boiling. Although later facts showed that the "graphene-based battery" was not a "graphene battery", it did not affect people's expectations for huawei to make a breakthrough in the field of graphene.
Are graphene batteries' bubbles'
Since October 23, 2015, when Huawei signed a graphene application research project with the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, people have been expecting huawei to deliver "disruptive" results, but everyone knows that it is not that easy.
In fact, what Huawei announced at BATTERY Japan was innovation in "graphene-powered high-temperature Lithium-ion batteries", with research coming from watt LABS, which aims to break through key technologies and raise the performance ceiling of existing lithium-ion batteries, rather than from an applied research programme at the University of Manchester.
According to Li Yangxing, chief scientist of Huawei Watt Laboratory, Huawei plans to launch the mobile network base station in desert, direct sunlight and other high temperature extreme environment. In the high temperature battery, graphene is used for efficient heat dissipation, rather than the anode or cathode material of the battery.
It is understood that in the high-temperature battery, graphene is important with the positive and negative poles, in the electrode material to build a conductive and thermal scaffolding, reduce the internal resistance, improve heat dissipation. For example, steel bars are added to concrete to increase strength, and MONOsodium glutamate is added to dishes to enhance taste. Graphene, combined with anode and cathode materials, will play a better role in energy storage.
Although this is not the graphene batteries, but according to huawei's supply of information, the performance of this new battery can kill at present, most of the lithium ion battery on the market, "the experimental results showed that graphene based new high temperature resistant technology can use lithium ion battery limit temperature of 10 ℃, the service life is 2 times the normal lithium ion battery."
Huawei's high-temperature battery has aroused new aspirations for graphene batteries. Graphene batteries have been described as "super batteries" in the eyes of the public and the media, but Wu Xiaowen, marketing director of a new energy company, said, "Graphene batteries have no strict meaning until now. In other directions, I can't draw conclusions. In the battery field, especially in the lithium-ion battery field, 'graphene battery' is basically a delusion."
There have been numerous advances in graphene cells, some of which claim to be on the verge of, or even have, a finished product, but then nothing. Wu Xiaowen said that there are still many internal and external problems to be solved in the use of graphene as a battery material, whether it is cost or technology, which is why graphene batteries have been introduced for countless times and disappeared for countless times.
The graphene industry is expected to enter a blowout period
Although graphene batteries are not promising, their applications in other fields are worth looking forward to.
For example, graphene material is of great significance for mobile phones. If mobile phones adopt graphene technology in large numbers, it will mean a revolution like smart phones replacing feature phones.
According to industry forecasts, if mobile phone chips are made of graphene, their performance will be greatly improved while their power consumption will be greatly reduced. If graphene is applied to the two poles of mobile phone batteries, the endurance will be more than 10 times that of ordinary batteries, and one charge per day for smart phones will become history. If a capacitor device is made of graphene, it can charge and discharge 100 to 1,000 times faster than a lithium-ion battery, and can charge a smartphone in a few minutes. Graphene is light, thin, almost completely transparent, strong and flexible, and if it could be used on mobile phones, we would be able to use flexible, rolled-up screens.
All of this is just imagination, but all of the leading companies are fully committed to graphene technology.
In 2014, ren zhengfei, in an interview with the media claimed that the next 10 to 20 years there is a technology revolution, "the biggest subversion in the future, I think age is age of graphene subversion silicon era", "chip is now the limit width, the limit of the silicon is seven nanometers, already near the border, graphite is cutting-edge technology revolution. For the foreseeable next 10 to 20 years, that is the real revolution."
Is not only huawei, samsung, apple, nokia, the fierce competition in the field of graphene has intensified, nokia patented one of the most remarkable application is using graphene for high-performance ultrathin cameras sensors (graphene to light the sensitivity of the search now camera image sensor used by more than one thousand times).
At this year's Mobile World Congress Graphene Summit, the head of GSMA, the global trade association representing the interests of the world's telecommunications operators, said: "The global production of graphene is already in the hundreds of tons per year, and the GSMA alliance expects it to reach the thousands of tons per year in the next five to 10 years. By 2020, the industrialization scale of graphene will achieve a breakthrough. Among them, the new energy market will exceed 53.4 billion yuan, the composite material market will exceed 37.2 billion yuan, and the electronic information industry market will exceed 26.7 billion yuan."
Graphene industry technology innovation alliance in China published in July this year the 2016 global graphene industry research report (hereinafter referred to as the "report"), said in a graphene r&d achievements transformation and industrialization development is rapid, so far, a number of research projects have been successfully completed and into the commercial preparation, is expected to enter the blowout graphene industry development.
China is in the midst of a graphene gold rush
China's Graphene Industry Technology Innovation Alliance predicts that the graphene industry is still in the initial stage. It is estimated that by 2020, the global graphene industry chain will form, and the market size will reach 100 billion yuan, with China accounting for 50% to 80%, and it will play a leading and core role in the global graphene industry.
Since 2011, Chinese scholars have published the most graphene-related academic papers in the world, and China's graphene patents have accounted for 40% of the global total. At the same time, our country also in leading the movement of the industrialization of the graphene materials, according to incomplete statistics, at present there are more than 300 domestic company engaged in graphene products development and production equipment, an important focus in graphene, lithium ion battery conductive additives, raw materials, super capacitor, anticorrosive coatings, electrical heating and health equipment, touch screen, and other fields.
However, zhongguancun graphene industry association director, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing university of nano science and technology research center director liu academicians on more than one occasion to domestic graphene industry expressed his concern "material flow rolling" in his view, graphene has a bright future, but right now we are more patience and persistence, steadfast effort.
Academician Liu Zhongfan said at the China International Carbon Material Conference held on December 8, "Although China has the largest graphene RESEARCH and development team, the research and development force is relatively scattered, small workshop disorderly development has become an important feature of the current graphene industry. The construction of industrial complexes is reckless and repetitive.
China is in the midst of a graphene gold rush, with graphene industrial parks being built across the country. According to the data provided by Academician Liu Zhongfan in the keynote report of the fifth China Science and Technology Policy Forum on September 12, there are nearly 20 industrial parks under the banner of graphene, including developed and less developed regions, which can be called a graphene industrialization movement.
"Although China's graphene market is very hot, it only focuses on low-end output and ignores the core technologies of the future graphene industry." Liu Zhongfan stressed that due to the lack of cooperation in research and development, key preparation technologies have not been solved, and the overall development and application level is low-end, which restricts the application of graphene in more fields.
