Italy's solar installed capacity reached 2.3GW in the first half of the year

According to data from Italia Solare, the Italian solar energy association, the country added 2.3 GW of solar installed capacity in the first half of the year, and as of the end of March, the cumulative photovoltaic installed capacity reached 27.4 GW.

In the first half of 2023, Italy added approximately 2.3 GW of photovoltaic system capacity, an increase of approximately 12% compared to the same period last year. As of the end of June 2023, the cumulative photovoltaic installed capacity in the country is approximately 27.4 GW.

The installed capacity of residential households accounts for approximately 47% of the newly added capacity in the first half of this year, and the recent growth is due to industrial and commercial systems (C&I) and utility scale solar projects with a scale of over 1 MW.

The grid connection of power plants above 10 MW that have been stagnant since July 2022 will restart in the second quarter of 2023. In particular, two 10 MW power plants located in Piedmont and Priya and one 36 MW power plant located in Sardinia have completed new grid connections.

On the contrary, due to the expiration and suspension of super subsidies, the newly installed capacity in the residential sector has slightly decreased from 569 MW in the first quarter of 2023 to 528 MW in the second quarter.

The regions with the highest share of new installed capacity include Lombardy Region (429 MW), Veneto (353 MW), and Emilia Romagna (235 MW).

Lombardy successfully defended its title with a cumulative installed capacity of 3.58 GW, widening the gap with the Priya region, which has a grid connected photovoltaic capacity of 3.18 GW. In the first quarter of 2023, Lombardy led with 429 MW of grid connected electricity, followed by Veneto and Emilia Romagna with 353 MW and 235 MW, respectively.
