As restaurants continue to face job shortages and operators will no doubt increasingly look to automated solutions, coupled with the emphasis on food handling amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, there's arguably never been a better time to run a food robot company. Striking while the iron is hot, Los Angeles-based Nommi announced a partnership with Restaurant brand C3 (Creating Culinary Communities) to roll out up to 1,000 automated food kiosks to real estate and college campus partners around the world.
Nommi focuses on the food bowl, which, like pizza, is a relatively unified and independent food delivery system that makes sense for robotic automation. The company's titular product is basically a slender kiosk with a built-in touch screen that lets customers customize their meals.
The machine can make noodles, cereal and salad bowls in as little as three minutes. The machine holds up to 330 bowls and LIDS and can prepare multiple bowls at the same time. Once completed, it can hold up to 21 prepared bowls in a "locker" and serve food via QR code payment. The C3 deal includes a partnership with Iron chef Masaharu Morimoto, which will bring his Sa 'moto-branded products to machines that will run 24/7.
Nommi has raised $20 million so far and is being helped by Wavemaker LABS, the incubator behind robotics companies such as Miso and Future Acres.
