UPS, the global logistics giant, made an appearance at the CiIE, and its smart logistics solution helped economic recovery

The latest macroeconomic data show that the Chinese economy has maintained a steady recovery despite the difficult recovery of the global economy and the lingering shadow of the epidemic.

China's imports rose 20.6 percent year on year in October, while exports rose 27.1 percent, leaving a trade surplus of 84.54 billion U.S. dollars, up 47.5 percent year on year, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs on Nov. 7.

Against the backdrop of tight global supply chains, China's import and export growth has accelerated, which shows that China's domestic market potential continues to be unleashed and its position as the "factory of the world" has been strengthened.

Logistics industry, as the "capillary" of economic operation, plays a crucial role in this process.

They help deliver vital supplies to customers in need of production, connect global markets, and fulfill their responsibilities as promoters of global trade in the fight against COVID-19.

In order to get close to customers and understand market feedback, the 4th China International Import Expo (CIIE) was held in Shanghai National Convention and Exhibition Center in the past week. Many global logistics giants and well-known domestic and foreign logistics, supply chain and logistics parks and other related enterprises and platforms participated in the expo.

UPS participated in the CIIE for the fourth time with the theme of "Outsmart the World, Green The Future", and showed its global smart logistics network, innovative digital solutions and the latest sustainable development achievements to exhibitors and partners, which became one of the highlights of the CIIE.

Logistics digitization capabilities, a key driver of economic recovery

Last year, the outbreak of the epidemic, so that many countries around the world have adopted control measures, triggering a global supply chain crisis. Dun & Bradstreet estimates that 94% of Fortune 1,000 companies have experienced supply chain disruptions during the pandemic.

At the same time, affected by the epidemic, consumers have gradually developed the habit of online shopping. Even after the epidemic eased, people's online shopping habit did not change, but continued to buy online. E-commerce has also witnessed rapid development driven by the epidemic.

How to manage these orders well, how to ensure the supply chain of factories around the world, so as to maintain capacity, how to deliver goods to consumers on time, these practical problems have constituted a huge test for the logistics industry.

UPS's digital capabilities at the ciIE provided multiple solutions for the entire logistics industry, indirectly accelerating the pace of economic recovery.

During this period, UPS made full use of its global logistics network, its own fleet of freighters and cross-border customs clearance advantages, and increased its overall capacity by more than 30% compared to before the epidemic, providing a stable guarantee for the recovery of the supply chain.

To meet the changing needs of the market, UPS has developed and upgraded a variety of digital tools.

For example, in order to help enterprises improve efficiency and reduce costs, UPS upgraded its wechat mail service again this year, optimizing many functions and trying to provide Chinese customers with a tool for cross-border mail without worry on their mobile phones.

You can use the UPS ID to log in to the UPS wechat, and the UPS ID is automatically synchronized to the mobile phone.

Through UPS wechat, customers can experience a variety of convenient services such as direct payment ordering, checking shipping history, one-click tracking of import and export shipment status, time and cost calculation, and so on. After completing the delivery, the logistics progress can be managed in real time through the package tracking function.

In addition, UPS has recently released My Choice for Business. It's a free online tool for small and medium businesses. Through a fully integrated interface, all ongoing import and export cargo can be tracked at any time; It can also obtain goods information more quickly according to the demand, and make a good plan and management in advance.

It can be used by multiple related personnel in the enterprise, all of whom can know the status of all goods synchronously, helping customers simplify the operation process, reduce operating costs and improve efficiency.

Digital capabilities are a key driver of the global economic recovery.

With the help of UPS digital tools, a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises can use the saved manpower, material and financial resources to focus on business development and product development, and maintain their competitiveness in the cold economic winter.

At present, UPS is working hard to leverage the flexibility and capacity of its global smart logistics network to help Chinese enterprises provide reliable connections to overseas markets and contribute to the gradual recovery of the global economy.

Supply chain diagnosis optimization, customized to solve the logistics pain points of small and medium-sized enterprises

At the ciIE, UPS Smart Logistics also showed another dark technology, that is its supply chain optimization and diagnostic services.

Supply chain diagnosis and optimization can be analyzed and optimized from four dimensions, including network layout, carbon emissions, inventory and transportation. The whole process includes: Understand customers' needs and pain points, formulate development goals and expectations, plan appropriate optimization schemes, propose hypothetical schemes and analyze them, provide recommended schemes and estimate the results, and help customers select appropriate UPS service products and solutions. Through this comprehensive analysis to optimize the process, to help customers achieve operational level of improvement.

For example, one UPS customer, who designs and manufactures outdoor sports goods, currently has 20 product lines, more than 500 products, involving three hybrid business models -- B2B, B2B2C and B2C. In terms of transportation, a mixture of various modes of transportation (sea, air and express) are also used.

UPS is their main express carrier, handling their shipments between China and the United States. To help the company better balance speed and price and save money, UPS offered IMO (International Mode of Transportation Optimization).

This service mainly includes three aspects:

1. Analyze the weight balance between air freight service and UPS small parcel service on several transportation routes.

2. Analyze the transportation time.

3. After analyzing and comparing the transportation costs, the optimal scheme is finally put forward.

By using IMO, UPS analyzes the weight balance of each route for this customer, helping them understand how to choose the best transportation service for different weights of cargo.

In terms of specific results, through UPS optimization and diagnosis, the customer can reduce 18.8% transportation cost on the route from Taoyuan, Taiwan Province, China to Tianjin. UPS can help customers reduce shipping costs by 15.6% on the route from Tianjin, China to Boulder, USA. Not only that, the former can shorten the transportation time by 25%, while the latter can directly shorten the transportation time by 60%.

All of this relies on UPS's data collection and processing capabilities accumulated as a century-old logistics company.

UPS previously reported consolidated revenue of approximately $23.4 billion for the second quarter of fiscal 2021, with growth across all business lines. Media analysis believes that UPS's strong revenue growth is mainly due to small and medium enterprise business, ground transportation B2C e-commerce components outstanding contribution.

Intimate customized services, in-depth understanding of customer needs, the international giant is currently thinking about how to better provide refined services for small and medium-sized enterprises.

As Qian Jiang, PRESIDENT of UPS China, said, "UPS always supports and strives to keep pace with the development of China's small and medium enterprises. "As a reliable partner to smes, UPS continues to innovate to enhance quality service and flexible and efficient logistics solutions based on customer needs."

Digital genes are rooted in UPS's 100-year history

Founded in 1907, UPS is the largest express transportation company in the world. Its business network covers more than 220 countries and regions in the world from zero to zero, which is inseparable from its digital gene rooted in a hundred years of history.

As early as 1988, UPS acquired two technology companies to develop a system that allowed shippers to track each vehicle along a route through a computer screen and control the engine through an on-board device to help the UPS vehicles avoid trouble.

And UPS technicians are starting to develop an automated package tracking system similar to fedex's.

The following year, UPS invested $80 million to build a computer and electronic communications center in New Jersey that would connect UPS's global computer network. In 1991, UPS began a bold move to push the competition into the high-tech field by developing DIAD to surpass fedex's information systems capabilities.

Over the next decade, UPS has invested more than $11 billion and continues to invest $1 billion a year in new technologies, including information backbones, PCS and laptops, wireless communications and mobile data exchange systems.

"UPS today is no longer a trucking company with technology, it is a technology company with trucks," a media comment said at the time.

At present, UPS has changed from a single cargo transport player to a supply chain giant integrating logistics, capital flow and information flow.

From the surprise brought by UPS to the market at this CIIE, UPS, an international giant with a fleet of 570 self-operated and charter aircraft and a network covering more than 220 countries and regions, is heading for a broader sea of stars.
