After entering 2022, the good news of domestic battery new energy industry chain companies expanding production and signing contracts continues one after another. According to the incomplete statistics of the battery network, in the first quarter of 2022, lithium battery companies represented by BYD, Xinwangda, China Innovation Aviation, Yiwei Lithium Energy, etc. have successively announced a number of new investment and construction projects, and the overall investment and construction funds are as high as 2091.03 100 million yuan, and the annual production capacity of construction reached 579GWh, which was further accelerated compared with the same period last year.

Over 209.1 billion! 579GWh! In the first quarter of this year, the investment and expansion of lithium battery continued to rise

Tens of billions of investment projects are frequently appearing, and the TWh era is accelerating

A few days ago, the "White Paper on the Development of China's New Energy Vehicle Industry (2022)" jointly released by research institutions EVTank, Ivey Economic Research Institute and China Battery Industry Research Institute shows that in 2021, global sales of new energy vehicles will reach 6.7 million, a year-on-year increase. The rate increased by 102.4%, of which the sales volume in the Chinese market reached 3.548 million, a year-on-year increase of 160.1%. Looking forward to 2030, EVTank predicts that global sales of new energy vehicles will reach 47.8 million, accounting for nearly 50% of new car sales that year.

According to the data of the China Automobile Association, from January to February, the production and sales of new energy vehicles in my country were 820,000 and 765,000 respectively, an increase of 1.6 times and 1.5 times year-on-year respectively, and the market share reached 17.9%. In addition, from January to February, the total installed capacity of power batteries in my country was 29.9GWh, a year-on-year increase of 109.7%. Among them, the cumulative installed capacity of ternary batteries was 13.1GWh, accounting for 43.8% of the total installed capacity, a cumulative increase of 50.6% year-on-year; the cumulative installed capacity of lithium iron phosphate batteries (lifepo4 battery) was 16.7GWh, accounting for 55.9% of the total installed capacity, a cumulative increase of 203.1% year-on-year. %, showing a rapid growth momentum.

There is no doubt that the rapid growth of new energy vehicle production and sales and the continuous increase in the installed capacity of power batteries have become the biggest driving force for the accelerated expansion of power battery companies in the first quarter. It can be seen from the above table that domestic power battery companies represented by BYD, Sunwanda, China Innovation Aviation, Yiwei Lithium Energy, etc. have significantly accelerated their production expansion, and investment projects of tens of billions of dollars have appeared frequently.

On January 25th and 26th, the Guangzhou Base Project and Jiangmen Base Project of China Innovation Aviation Power Battery and Energy Storage System Investment and Cooperation Agreement were signed one after another, and a total of 100GWh of new production capacity was planned.

On the afternoon of March 11, Sunwoda announced that it will invest in the construction of a new energy production base project in Zhuhai, Guangdong, with a total investment of 12 billion yuan. After the completion of the construction, the annual production capacity of power batteries and energy storage batteries will reach 30GWh. A week later, Sunwanda announced the construction of a power battery and energy storage industry production base project in Shifang, Sichuan, with an investment of 8 billion yuan to build a 20GWh power battery and energy storage battery production base.

In addition, Yiwei Lithium Energy, Gateway Power, and Chuneng New Energy have also announced the construction of ten billion power battery projects in the first quarter. The urgency of expanding production is evident, and the TWh era will accelerate.

Overseas battery factories are eyeing, domestic battery factories are speeding up

While domestic power battery companies are accelerating their deployment, overseas power battery companies are also eyeing them. to pull back a game.

On March 4, Japan's Panasonic Corporation plans to buy land in the United States to build a large-scale power battery factory, which may produce 4680 batteries for Tesla. The investment in the factory may be as high as billions of dollars. Subsequently, SK On also announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Ford and Koç Holding to establish a joint venture in the United States to produce electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The factory plans to start operations by 2025 with an annual production capacity of 30GWh to 45GWh. According to SKI's plan, the annual production capacity of SK On batteries will be expanded to 85GWh in 2023, 220GWh in 2025, and more than 500GWh in 2030.

On March 14, Samsung SDI and POSCO Group also announced that they will build a 6,500-square-meter pilot production line for solid-state batteries for electric vehicles in South Korea, and lay out the frontier market.

On March 24, LG New Energy will spend nearly US$1.4 billion to build a second independent electric vehicle battery plant in Arizona, USA, with an annual production capacity of 11GWh, which is planned to be put into production in the second half of 2024; Stellantis signed an agreement to form a joint venture in Canada and establish the first large-scale domestic electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant. It is reported that LG New Energy is currently also investing in the construction of third and fourth battery plants with General Motors in the United States. With the latest investment plan, the company has now ensured an annual production capacity of more than 200GWh in North America.

In addition, the battery network noticed that with the increase in overseas market demand, entering the international market has also become a new choice for domestic power battery companies.

On the evening of March 29, EVE announced that it plans to purchase real estate in Hungary and build a power battery manufacturing plant; on March 16, Guoxuan Hi-Tech announced that it plans to issue global depositary receipts overseas and list them on the Swiss Stock Exchange. It plans to launch in Europe and North America. , Asia and other overseas markets to increase power battery capacity construction and supporting industry construction; previously, CATL also stated that it would enter the US market and would also consider building factories in Mexico and Canada.

It is understood that a number of domestic power battery companies, including Ningde Times, BYD, Honeycomb Energy, Yiwei Lithium Energy, manly battery, Envision AESC, Funeng Technology, etc., have established large-scale power battery factories overseas, and some It also announced that it will build its own factory to better support overseas car companies and seize market share.

Keep up with the speed of battery production expansion and invest in the construction of upstream materials for lithium batteries

It is worth noting that, as the pace of battery production expansion has accelerated, the prices of upstream raw materials have also begun to skyrocket. In order to stabilize the supply of raw materials and ensure normal production, major power battery factories have also begun to directly "intervene" in the construction of material projects to speed up. Raw material layout.

Taking CATL as an example, on February 20, CATL or its wholly-owned subsidiary will increase the capital of RMB 280 million to Zhongke Xingcheng in Gui'an New District for the joint venture construction of Zhongke Xingcheng in Gui'an New District with an annual output of 100,000 tons of lithium batteries. Anode Material Integration Project". On the evening of February 8, Jiayuan Technology also announced that it plans to jointly invest and establish Guangdong Jiayuan Times New Energy Materials Co., Ltd. with Ningde Times in Meixian District, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, for the construction of a high-performance electrolytic copper foil project with an annual output of 100,000 tons.
