Oxbotica partnered with AppliedEV to develop the world's largest AMR robot

"AppliedEV's upcoming AMR will be over 3 meters in length."

On 9 September 2021, Oxbotica and AppliedEV announced a collaboration to develop a fully autonomous, multi-purpose electric vehicle capable of being deployed in a variety of environments for a variety of commercial applications. The project combines Oxbotica's autonomous vehicle software with AppliedEV's EV-Skateboard platform. The first applications of the new platform will be industrial logistics and goods delivery.

Oxbotica is an autonomous driving solution development company founded in 2015 as the Oxford University Mobile Robotics Group by legendary autonomous driving and robotics engineer Paul Newman. AppliedEV is an Australian electric vehicle startup that develops autonomous mobility platforms that allow large autonomous mobile robots to safely move at 10 miles per kilowatt-hour.

No other company in the AMR space is currently working on a robot of this scale. Generally speaking, the size of AMR is not more than 1 meter. The largest AMR is the Mir1350 produced by MiR, which has a maximum payload of 1,350 kilograms and is 1.3 meters long and 0.9 meters wide. But AppliedEV's forthcoming AMR will be more than three meters long.

The size of the robot is very important. The small size robot and the large size robot with the same function are far apart in the algorithm kernel. This is because the robot in the process of moving need to consider the power, force, inertia and other physical factors. Simple size enlargement will only lead to product failure.

In addition, ClearpathRobotics has released two different AMRS converted to outdoor design, the larger one called the Jackal. But even if it is defined as large, it does not exceed one meter in length. This is because in field operations, if the robot is too large, it needs to increase the power assembly, which will increase the power consumption per kilometer of the robot.

Unlike electric cars, robots work more than 18 hours a day and remain charged the rest of the time. With the addition of batteries, charging time will be extended. On the other hand, the higher the battery capacity, the chances of battery damage multiply. In other words, Oxbotica and AppliedEV are taking a big gamble that will be a milestone for AMR in a size and working environment that AMR has never been able to achieve before.
