Recently, Panasonic announced that it will delay the commercial production of the Tesla 4680 battery to improve its performance.
Panasonic hopes to first improve the performance of the 4680 battery and then start production from April to September 2024. It is reported that Panasonic previously planned to start mass production of 4680 batteries for Tesla from April 2023 to March 2024.
It is reported that Panasonic is currently operating a pilot production line for 4680 batteries at its factory in Wakayama, Japan. Tesla is already producing 4680 batteries, but it is difficult to achieve the production and performance goals of 4680 batteries. Tesla has always believed that the 4680 battery is the key to manufacturing cheaper and more attractive electric vehicles. The company plans to steadily increase the production of 4680 batteries before Cyberrack production next year. Tesla currently only uses this battery in the Model Y basic model.
Tesla is producing 4680 batteries at its factories in California and Texas, USA. As of the end of 2022, Tesla's weekly production of 4680 batteries can be used in over 1000 electric vehicles, equivalent to about one-fifth of Tesla's Texas factory's annual production capacity.
Tesla's South Korean supplier LG New Energy has announced plans to build a new 4680 battery production line at its South Korean factory by the end of this year, but did not disclose when mass production will begin.
