Porotech receives US$20 million in Series A financing, accelerating mass production of InGaN-based Micro LEDs

On the 22nd, Porotech, a Micro LED microdisplay technology company spun off from the Cambridge Bridge, announced that it had received US$20 million (approximately RMB 127 million) in Series A financing. The funds are intended to be used to accelerate Porotech's global expansion plan and InGaN base. Mass production of Micro LED products.

It is reported that this round of financing was led by Ameba Capital, followed by Samsung Venture, HLC/Highlight Capital and individual investors. Among them, the old shareholder Speedinvest also continued to invest. Raise and call.

Perhaps behind the successful financing is Porotech's proprietary technology with great application potential. Different from the lens optical synthesis method and the RGB stacking scheme, Porotech, based on its porous GaN semiconductor material technology, PoroGaN, realizes monochromatic and full-color Micro LED displays in a single InGaN material system, meeting high-quality images under high-brightness backgrounds. Projection's requirements for parameters such as brightness, efficiency and resolution of the display, even in the outdoor environment under sunlight, can have an excellent display effect, and this is exactly the requirements of the next-generation AR/VR and other devices for the display.

Porotech said that Micro LED displays will play a pivotal role in next-generation TVs, wearable devices and smartphones, while GaN material technology is generally regarded as the only one that can provide high-brightness, high-efficiency displays to meet AR/VR/MR requirements Materials for XR extended reality needs, etc.

Micro LED mass production, InGaN-based

At present, due to the mixing of different material systems, the full-color Micro LED process is complex and difficult to prepare, resulting in high prices for end products, which discourages the mass consumer market. In response to this problem, Porotech focuses on the research of porous GaN semiconductor material technology. The solution based on the same material system can eliminate the complexity problems caused by synthesizing devices based on different material structures, thereby promoting the mass production of Micro LED displays.

In October 2021, Porotech announced the successful development of the world's first 0.55-inch InGaN-based red Micro LED display with a resolution of 960 x 540. While reducing cost, the display maximizes achievable wavelengths to 640nm or higher, improving product performance. This is said to be a first in the field of microdisplay visualization.

Porotech revealed that the first InGaN-based red-light Micro LED display product has started production and has been supplied to some well-known companies in the global display technology field.

With the new porous GaN semiconductor material technology and the results obtained based on this technology, Porotech has developed into a "rookie" force in the field of third-generation semiconductors such as GaN and new displays such as Micro LED, and is currently in AR/VR/XR. Under the spotlight in the field of smart devices, it is favored by investors. Prior to this financing, Porotech also received £3 million in venture capital in July 2021, as evidenced by the financing performance.
