Samson Solar Center will become the largest photovoltaic power plant in the United States

Introduction: The global fast-food giant McDonald's has signed three new virtual power purchase agreements for two wind farms and one solar project. The company decided to deploy 380 MW of renewable energy last year before adding 750 MW of new capacity.

This week, McDonald’s signed three new virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs)-two wind farms and a solar project-an an additional 750 MW of installed capacity, and the global installed capacity of renewable energy exceeded 100 million watts. turn off.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said the company’s share of the two wind farms will reach 327 megawatts. China's share in this solar project will reach 423 megawatts.

The new VPPAs builds on McDonald’s existing 380 MW renewable energy portfolio, which was first announced in November 2019. Its portfolio includes the Pilot Wind Project and the Samson Solar Project, both of which are in Texas. Once completed, McDonald’s will hold 220 MW of shares in the Aviator project and 160 MW of shares in the Samson project, bringing its total renewable energy investment to 113 million kilowatts, of which wind power is 547 MW. Solar power generation is 583 MW.

The project is expected to go online in 2023. By then, the Samson Solar Center will become the largest photovoltaic power station in the United States and one of the largest photovoltaic power stations in the world. The remaining capacity of the project is also under similar corporate procurement agreements with Honda (200 MW), Google (100 MW), Home Depot (50 MW), Blaine (150 MW), and Denton in Texas. (75 MW) and Garland (25 MW) signed a contract.

Although McDonald’s has only recently begun to focus on renewable energy, especially solar energy, the company has quickly become a world leader in solar corporate procurement.

According to the "2019 Solar Energy Means Business Report", the largest companies that purchased or owned solar power generation capacity in 2019 were Apple (400 MW), Amazon (370 MW), Wal-Mart (330 MW), Target (285 MW) Watts) and Google (245 MW). Although these giants will definitely expand their portfolios, when McDonald’s projects reach commercial operations, the fast-food giant’s 583 MW may still be the largest of all companies.
