Samsung SDI confirms that is developing lithium iron phosphate batteries and new cylindrical batteries

On March 16, Samsung SDI confirmed that it is developing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.

At present, most lithium iron phosphate batteries in the world are produced by Chinese companies, but Korean battery manufacturers LG New Energy and SK On have been unwilling to develop them. In terms of performance, the energy density of the LFP battery is lower than the nickel -based battery, but it is relatively stable and cheap.

LFP battery is one of the important platforms in the field of electric vehicles. To achieve the diversification of business and customers, Samsung SDI is trying to develop LFP batteries.

At the same time, Samsung SDI is also expected to complete the construction of solid -state battery production lines. According to reports, the production line will start trial production this year and plan to start commercial production in 2027. In addition, Samsung SDI also plans to supply 4680 batteries to BMW or Volvo, not Tesla.

Samsung SDI electronic materials business revenue was 624.3 billion won in the fourth quarter of last year, less than 708.7 billion in the same period last year, a decrease of 11.9%from the previous month.
