Samsung SDI has signed a contract with Lucid to jointly develop electric vehicle batteries. Lucid announced on its website on July 7 that it has signed a cooperation agreement with Samsung SDI in the second half of 2018 to jointly develop a new mass-produced electric vehicle battery. According to the agreement, the Lucid electric vehicle will be launched in 2018 with Samsung SDI's battery.
The cylindrical battery jointly developed by Samsung SDI and Lucid will be used in mass-produced electric vehicles starting in 2018. The exact supply number and life span were not disclosed.
The new cylindrical battery developed and produced by Samsung SDI is superior in energy density, power generation, battery life and safety compared to previous electric vehicle batteries. The battery is designed to be more adaptable to rapid charging to make it easier for electric vehicle owners to charge.
Lucid signed a battery module deal with Samsung SDI within a week after announcing its plan to build an electric vehicle production base in Arizona, the U.S.
Forbes said Lucid is a strong candidate to compete with tesla, an electric car giant, and that Samsung SDI's partnership with Lucid would be a great opportunity to revive itself at a time when Samsung SDI has been in the spotlight due to the explosion scandal.
Lucid, formerly Known as Atieva before changing its name to better reflect tesla's identity as an electric car company, is one of Tesla's strongest rivals. In 2014, Lucid unveiled a concept car drawing with an aluminum body structure, and more recently, the electric car Atmophyticus, which attracted attention from both inside and outside the industry. Lucid plans to build its electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Casa Grande, Arizona, by 2018.
