Service robots: $12.9 billion in sales worldwide

Sales of professional service robots rose 32 percent to $9.2 billion. Logistics systems such as autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) accounted for the largest share of the professional service robot market (41% of total sales). The second largest category was inspection and maintenance robots (39% of all robots sold). These two segments account for 80% of the total market share.

Service robots for personal and home use are mainly in the field of home robotics, including vacuuming and lawn mowing robots. Its value rose 15% to $3.7 billion. The IFR outlook predicts strong growth in sales of professional and personal service robots (2019-2022). That's the conclusion of the World Robotics Report 2019 - Service Robots, released by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).

"In terms of value, sales projections for 2019 indicate cumulative sales in the professional service robotics sector of approximately $12.6 billion," said IFR Secretary General Dr. Susanne Bieller. "Robots in logistics, medical and field services are the most important contributors."

Professional Service robots - Market Overview

Total sales of professional service robots rose 61 percent to more than 271,000 units in 2018 from about 168,000 units in 2017.

Sales of logistics systems are expected to be nearly $3.7 billion, up 53 percent from the previous year. In terms of units, nearly 111,000 logistics systems were sold in 2018, an increase of 60 percent over 2017 (69,000). The 7,700 autonomous navigation vehicles (AGVs) in manufacturing environments and nearly 103,000 in non-manufacturing environments are the driving force behind this rapidly growing market. The trend towards the use of logistics systems in non-manufacturing is strongly driven by warehouse solutions from major e-commerce companies. Hospital logistics also has great potential with the help of professional service robots.

About 106,000 testing and maintenance systems were sold in 2018. That's 39 percent of all professional service robot sales. The category of inspection and maintenance robots covers a wide variety of robots, from fairly low priced standard units to expensive custom solutions.

Sales of medical robots rose 50 percent to 5,100 units. Medical robots accounted for 31 percent of total sales of professional service robots. Sales rose 27% to $2.8 billion. The medical robot is the most expensive service robot, with an average unit price of $548,000, including accessories and services. The need for assistive robot solutions in aging societies in Europe and Asia also represents great growth potential for medical robotics.

Field robot sales rose 8 percent to $1 billion, accounting for 11 percent of total professional service robot sales. A total of 5,800 milking robots were sold in 2018, up 8% from 5,400 in 2017. Sales of agricultural robots for crop planting and gardening automation are expected to grow strongly at an average annual rate of about 50 percent. Sales are expected to reach 2,400 by 2022.

The exoskeleton supports ergonomic work by reducing the worker's load. Sales of electric human exoskeletons increased from 6,700 in 2017 to 7,300 in 2018. This kind of robot has high development potential.

Service Robots for Personal and Home Use - Market Overview

Meanwhile, the market for personal service robots is growing rapidly. Sales of robots of all types for personal and family tasks are forecast to exceed 22.1 million units (valued at $4.6 billion) in 2019 and 61.1 million units (valued at $11.5 billion) in 2022.

Vacuum cleaners and floor cleaning robots will enter more and more homes around the world. It is estimated that more than 17.6 million household robots, including automatic lawn mowers, pool cleaners and vacuum cleaners, will be sold in 2019. Auto sales are expected to grow at an average annual rate of 46 percent through 2022 and are expected to exceed 55 million units.

Service robot manufacturers for professional use by region

Service robot manufacturers in Europe and the United States play an important role in the market for professional use: both regions have a 45 percent market share. American companies are strong in logistics systems, while European companies dominate medical robotics. Companies in Europe and Asia, which make field robots, each have a market share of about 45 percent.
