SK ON showed its battery charging technology on the CES in 2023. This Korean battery manufacturer claimed that its technology aims to reduce the charging time of electric vehicle batteries to 18 minutes, which is reduced from the current 30 -minute charging time of electric vehicles. Nearly half.
According to the official website of SK on, the company received a request from a global car manufacturer in 2018 to ask the company to create an electric vehicle (EV) battery that can be charged quickly within 18 minutes. The request, so I developed the SF battery (SuperfastBattery, Super fast battery).
It is reported that the key to fast charging is about reducing the anode resistance when the lithium insertion is reduced when charging. In order to achieve this goal, SK ON company applied its unique coating technology, greatly reduced resistance, and proposed a new battery material to improve the charging speed. The company also applies a manufacturing solution to maximize the use of SBR, which is a binder that causes battery resistance during the coating process.
Generally speaking, fast charging will shorten the life of the battery. For example, if the warranty standard for electric vehicle batteries is set to 1,000 circulation life, the standard for fast charging is set to 400 times.
However, for the SF battery, its battery life is not affected by fast charging, and the cycle life can reach 1,000 times. Skon said that this is the company's strict test results.
SK ON completed the development of SF batteries in 2019. In 2021, electric models equipped with SF batteries debuted for the first time in the market. The company's current goal is to manufacture batteries that can be charged quickly in 10 minutes.
