Tesla researchers recently unveiled a design for a new electric car battery with a 100-year lifespan

As the world seeks to reduce carbon emissions, electric mobility is seen as one of the ways in which emissions targets set by countries can be met. To ensure sustainable development, countries need to switch to renewable energy sources, and EV manufacturers need to ensure that the car itself does not become another factor that pollutes the environment, because the opponents of electric vehicles always say that electric vehicles are retired for various reasons. Lithium-ion batteries will cause environmental pollution.

Lithium-ion batteries of electric vehicles can be reused through recycling, which can not only reduce battery costs, but also reduce environmental pollution as much as possible.

In addition to the way of battery recycling, if the service life of lithium-ion batteries can be longer, it is also another important solution to solve the cost and environmental factors of batteries.

But extending the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries is not so easy. Nevertheless, the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries is gradually increasing, and it is nothing new to be as long as the life of a car.

It is understood that Tesla researchers recently unveiled the design of a new type of electric vehicle battery that can last up to 100 years before needing to be replaced.

Batteries in current Tesla models are estimated to last about 200,000 miles or more than 20 years, and this new type of battery has a 5x longer lifespan!

Tesla is good at working with top talent in various fields, or acquiring some of the top technologies from startups, such as the dry electrode technology for the 4680 battery, a process Tesla spent $2 billion to acquire through the acquisition of Maxwell.

This new ultra-long-life battery was also developed by Tesla in collaboration with Jeff Dahn, one of the world's leading battery technologists. Dahn works at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, where Tesla has established an advanced battery research unit to benefit from Dahn's expertise in the field.

As one of the pioneers of the lithium-ion batteries used in most electronic devices today, Dahn has been working on lithium-ion batteries since their invention. After working to extend the life of lithium-ion batteries, Dahn is credited with the commercial success of lithium-ion batteries.

Dahn's work in the field has produced numerous patents and papers for Tesla, according to Electrek. The recently announced lithium-ion battery with ultra-long life is one of them.

The chemical composition of this new battery contains nickel, manganese and cobalt, which is NMC532. The content of cobalt is very low. The battery performance is still very good without cobalt. The electrolyte contains lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSl) salt. .

Constructed of just enough graphite, the NMC532 battery is rechargeable to 3.80 V, its energy density exceeds that of lithium iron phosphate batteries, and its cycle life greatly exceeds that of lithium iron phosphate batteries at 40°C, 55°C, and 70°C.

Its featured electrolyte demonstrates the battery's excellent cycle life at high temperatures, and the NMC532 battery, especially when balanced and charged to 3.8 V, exhibits better coulombic efficiency and less capacity compared to LiFePO4 batteries Attenuation and higher energy density, the lifetime is expected to be close to a century (100 years) at 25°C.

Battery decay is still an issue for EVs, and the introduction of new EV batteries will be a sustainable move, extending battery life to reduce battery replacements and recycling batteries are all sustainable trends.
