The global sales volume of new energy vehicles (NEV) exceeded 4.2 million units by September 2021, according to data released by Trendforce on November 14, the Asia Daily reported.
In the first nine months of 2021, 2.92 million electric vehicles were sold globally, up 153 percent from the same period last year. Plug-in hybrids sold 1.28 million units, up 135 percent from a year earlier.
Among them, the global sales volume of new energy passenger vehicles in September reached 685,900 units, up 98% year on year, and the market share was 10.2%, exceeding double digits for the first time and hitting a record high. 512,000 pure electric vehicles were sold, accounting for 7.6 percent of the global car market.
In terms of auto companies, Tesla has the highest market share, accounting for 21.5%, mainly due to the large number of deliveries in the Chinese market. China Wuling Hongguang is popular in the Local Chinese market for its affordable and lightweight features, accounting for 9.8% of the total, ranking second globally.
Byd (6.3 percent) and Volkswagen (5.7 percent) ranked third and fourth respectively. BMW, SAIC, Mercedes, Volvo, Audi, Kia and Hyundai have all sold more than 100,000 units.
From the perspective of models, Tesla Model 3 ranked first in sales from January to September, with a cumulative sales volume of 360,300 units. Hongguang MINIEV's cumulative sales reached 288,900 units, ranking second. Tesla Model Y sold 253,800 units, ranking third. No other model has more than 100,000 vehicles.

Tesla's Model Y surpassed The Hongguang MINIEV to take second place, with 68,500 and 35,200 units sold, respectively. In view of the above sales situation of new energy vehicles, some industry insiders said that the global auto market development is slow under the "semiconductor shortage" and the spread of COVID-19, but the sales of new energy vehicles still maintain a strong momentum.
