ECO STOR recently stated that the German utility-scale energy storage industry has recently begun a transformational development as the market begins to develop projects of 100MW+ scale.
ECO STOR is a German-Norwegian joint venture that designs and manufactures batteries of all sizes, from small household energy storage systems to large grid-scale energy storage systems. By the end of 2022, it is expected that its new installations in Germany will reach 100MW.
Notably, some of the first movers in Europe’s largest UK market, such as Gore Street Capital and Anesco, have recently laid out concrete plans to enter the German utility-scale energy storage market.
Gallmetzer believes pressure on land and grid access in the UK domestic market is driving them to expand overseas.
More recently, Bluefield Solar announced a deal for a £56,000/MW project, two months after another project was sold for £75,000/MW.
Part of the interest in utility-scale energy storage in Germany may be driven by an increase in the size of new projects. The German market has so far been dominated by small projects, with an average of only 2.9MWh of utility-scale battery storage projects coming into service in 2021.
That's starting to change. Power generation company RWE plans to commission a 72MW project by the end of 2022, Siemens and Fluence have announced a 100MW/200MWh project, but the exact delivery date is unclear, and ECO STOR is expected to commission a 100W/200MWh battery in 2024 energy storage project.
