Different people have different ideas about robots, from humanoid robots that may or may not let us out to unsettling tetrapods that may or may not accompany the future. However, few would have guessed that a robot the size of a fly would be better able to survive than a truly organic one. This is exactly the kind of robot that engineering researchers have developed, paving the way for intelligent insects that hopefully won't overrun the planet.
Calling DEAnsect robots insects might be a stretch, but their little alien form is sure to capture the imagination. The size of a very large fly (almost like a cockroach), the robot's flexible body allows it to be folded and crushed, but that's not enough to stop it from moving again.
Considering it doesn't have that big a motor or engine, the movement itself is almost science fiction. Instead, its legs are as thin as hair and made up of elastomer membranes, almost like artificial muscles. Each time a voltage is applied and removed, the membrane is compressed and returns to its normal shape. At 400 times per second, this high-speed switch causes DEAnsect to move. And moving it at an astonishing 3 centimeters per second.
The miracle does not stop there. Despite its large size, the robot is equipped with a microcontroller that acts as a brain and a photodiode that acts as an eye, although only recognises black and white patterns. One version of the robotic insect even comes with its own battery, allowing it to operate and move around remotely.
You may begin to wonder about the purpose of this device. Admittedly, it seems to be in the early stages of development. Researchers at the EPFL School of Engineering plan to place transmitters and sensors that will allow the insects to better navigate their surroundings and even communicate with each other. The small robots could be used for remote repairs or research in environments where larger robots cannot adapt, such as actual insect habitats.
