French renewable energy generator Total Ern has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to build a 2 GW plus solar park to power a 1 GW green hydrogen production complex in Australia's northern region.
The Paris-based company plans to install the power plant near Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory. The agreement with the local government, which outlines Total Ellen's cooperation with the authorities, was signed on Monday.
Known as the Darwin Hydrogen Centre, the site will be home to a large electrolyzer that will produce more than 80,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. Products are planned to be supplied to domestic and international companies.
The photovoltaic (PV) portion of the large-scale plan will span a total area of 4,000 acres (1,619 hectares).
Total Eren, the renewable energy arm of French energy group TotalEnergies, estimates the project has the potential to create more than 2,000 jobs during construction and 175 on an ongoing basis.
Globally, Total ERN operates more than 3.5 GW of wind and solar photovoltaic capacity.
