U.S. Department of Transportation sets new rules for electric vehicle charging pile program

Recently, the U.S. Department of Transportation proposed establishing minimum standards and requirements for an electric vehicle charging program that has received $5 billion in government funding.

The bill calls for charging piles to be spaced a maximum of 50 miles along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs) and no more than 1 mile from highways. Electric vehicle charging stations funded by the U.S. government must use DC fast chargers (DCFCs). Each charging pile must have at least four charging ports, which can charge four vehicles at the same time. Charging piles must be available for public use 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and membership is not required for use. All EV charging equipment will be required to be certified by OSHA's Nationally Accredited Testing Laboratory.
