Velodyne lidar applied to pure electric lawn mower for high-precision navigation

Velodyne Lidar today announced a multi-year agreement to supply its Puck™ lidar to Renu Robotics, an industry leader in autonomous vegetation management systems. Renu Robotics' Renubot is a fully autonomous, all-electric lawn mower that helps solar and energy facilities maintain their sites for best-in-class performance while reducing costs, time and carbon emissions.



After some competitive product evaluation, Renu Robotics settled on Puck. The company found that Velodyne's Pucks have exceptional quality, reliability and performance, including the ability to significantly reduce system interference for optimal positioning accuracy. Velodyne's sensors are very efficient in terms of power consumption, which not only expands the Renubot's range but also enhances its sustainability capabilities.


Equipped with Puck sensors, Renubot enables safe, efficient, high-precision navigation and obstacle avoidance when conducting large-scale plant-level vegetation management. The mower uses lidar for on-site navigation and uses real-time kinematic differential positioning (RTK) GPS correction to keep the vehicle's position within 2 centimeters. Renubot leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to enable autonomous command and control, and to familiarize and assess terrain while mowing and grooming facility sites with high precision.
