What are the components of the Da Vinci surgical robot?

The Da Vinci Surgical System is an advanced robotic platform designed to perform complex surgical procedures using a minimally invasive approach. The Da Vinci robot consists of three parts: a surgeon's console, a bedside robotic arm system and an imaging system.

1. Surgeon's console

The surgeon sits on a console, outside the sterile area of the operating room, using both hands (by operating two main controllers) and feet (by pedals) to control the instrument and a 3-D high-definition endoscope. As seen in the stereoscopic eyepiece, the tip of the surgical instrument moves in sync with the surgeon's hands.

2. Bedside mechanical arm system

Patient Cart (Patient Cart) is an operating component of surgical robot. Its main function is to provide support for instrument arm and camera arm. The assistant physician works at the bedside robotic arm system in the sterile area, is responsible for changing instruments and endoscopes, and assists the surgeon to complete the surgery. In order to ensure patient safety, the physician assistant has higher priority control over the movement of the bedside manipulator system than the surgeon.

3. Imaging system

The imaging system (Video Cart) is equipped with the core processor and image processing equipment of the surgical robot. It is located outside the sterile area during the operation and can be operated by the visiting nurse, and various auxiliary surgical equipment can be placed. Endoscopic surgery robot for high-resolution three-dimensional (3 d) lens, the surgical field has more than 10 times magnification, bring the surgeon cavity of patients with three-dimensional high-definition images, makes the surgeon can grasp the operating distance, more than ordinary laparoscopic surgery can identify the anatomical structure, improve the operation accuracy.

The Da Vinci robotic surgical system is based on robotic surgical technology developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (formerly Stanford Research Institute). Intuitive Surgical then teamed up with IBM, MIT and Heartport to further develop the system. The Da Vinci robotic surgical system has been approved by the FDA for use in adult and pediatric general surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, head and neck surgery, and heart surgery.
