Wind power is a central pillar of green electricity in Austria

Almost 100% of the electricity produced in Austria comes from renewable green electricity in Austria, of which wind power accounts for 21.3%, hydropower accounts for 75%, and the rest comes from biomass fuels and photovoltaics.

In the past year, green power generation has covered about 80% of Austria's electricity demand, with the rest coming from electricity imported from the European grid (from wind to nuclear power) or domestic natural gas generation. To achieve the goal of generating all electricity domestically, sustainably and fossil fuel-free by 2030, Austrian wind power generation capacity needs to more than double again, photovoltaic power generation area needs to be increased tenfold, and a small number of hydropower and biomass power plants need to be added.

According to the Austrian Energy Agency, there are currently about 1,300 wind turbines in operation in Austria, and only 400 more wind turbines can be added to triple wind power generation. However, there are many obstacles to expanding wind power, especially the lengthy administrative approval process and environmental impact assessment process.
