Amazon Global Announces 37 New Renewable Energy Projects, Adding 3,500 MW of Clean Energy Generation

Recently, Amazon announced the launch of 37 new renewable energy projects worldwide. The new projects increased the total generation capacity of Amazon's global renewable energy projects by nearly 30%, from 12,200 megawatts to 15,700 megawatts. Today, Amazon has a total of 310 renewable energy projects worldwide, covering 19 countries, which will help it achieve the goal set in the Climate Pledge to achieve zero carbon emissions across all business lines by 2040, compared to the The Paris Agreement targets are 10 years ahead of schedule.

"Our commitment to protecting the planet and reducing Amazon's environmental impact has propelled us to become the world's largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in both 2020 and 2021," said Amazon's CEO. "As business grows, adhering to 100% Using renewable energy to support Amazon's mission to operate, we will continue to invest in renewable energy. Today, Amazon has 310 wind and solar projects in 19 countries and will strive to use 100% renewable energy by 2025. The goal of business operation is five years ahead of the original plan in 2030."

The 37 new projects announced this time are located in the United States, Spain, France, Australia, Canada, India, Japan and the United Arab Emirates. These new projects vary in type and size and include three new wind farms, 26 new solar farms, and eight new rooftop solar installations around the world. So far, Amazon has 310 renewable energy projects, including 134 wind and solar farms and 176 rooftop solar projects.

Once operational, Amazon's 310 projects are expected to generate 42,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable energy annually, enough to power 3.9 million U.S. homes each year. In addition, the zero-carbon energy produced by these projects will help reduce carbon emissions by 17.3 million tons per year, equivalent to reducing the emissions of 3.7 million vehicles in the United States each year.

In addition, Amazon has continued to invest in two renewable energy projects in China, including a 100 megawatt (MW) solar project in Shandong province announced in 2020, which currently generates 128,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy annually ; and the 100-megawatt (MW) wind energy project in Jilin Province, which will be operational in 2023, and is expected to provide more than 300,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable energy annually by then, equivalent to powering more than 150,000 ordinary Chinese households .

Amazon co-sponsored the Climate Pledge in 2019, pledging to achieve zero carbon emissions across all business lines by 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement target. To achieve this goal, Amazon will continue to reduce emissions and take concrete actions to advance its goal of using 100% renewable energy to support company operations by 2025, five years ahead of the original plan of 2030. Amazon is also committed to its vision of "zero-carbon transportation", 50% of its shipments will be zero-carbon by 2030, and it has purchased 100,000 electric vans, which is also Amazon's largest electric van order ever. In addition, Amazon is further developing decarbonization services and solutions by investing $2 billion in the Climate Pledge Fund.
