Duke Energy opened 11mW/11MWH battery energy storage project in North Carolina

U.S. public utilizer Duke Energy Company has recently opened and operated a 11MW/11MWH battery energy storage project. Although the project is not large, it is by far the largest of similar projects in North Carolina.

This battery energy storage system is deployed on the land rented by the U.S. Marine Corps Leo Qiong base in Angselo County, North Carolina. It uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries to deploy with the existing 13MW solar power facilities and passed through the total site of 13MW solar power facilities, and passed the pass, and passed the pass. Duke Energy's substation is connected to the power grid.

OCI is a subsidiary of global construction and engineering Black & Veatch. It is a major engineering, construction and procurement (EPC) contractor.

Duke Energy Corporation also built the largest battery energy storage system before North Carolina, that is, a 9MW battery energy storage project operating in Qitong, Ashville in 2020.

The company stated that when looking forward to the future development, it was planned to deploy a 1,600MW battery energy storage system in the three states by 2029, including 1GW independent deployment battery energy storage system, and in the solar energy+energy storage projects planned to be deployed in Karolina. The 600MW battery energy storage system will also build a 1700MW pumping storage (PHES) power generation facility. This is part of the company's carbon emission reduction plan proposed by the North Carolina and South Carolina in May 2022.

Duke Energy said that the carbon emission reduction plan required the company to deploy 5.9GW renewable energy and clean energy power generation facilities. By 2030, carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by 70%, and carbon neutrality will be achieved in 2050. The company also stated that by 2035, it will close all coal -fired power plants in southern United States.
