The energy industry think tank Ember released a report that from May to August this year, the EU's photovoltaic power generation reached 99.4 TWh, an increase of about 25% year-on-year, accounting for 12% of the EU's total electricity production.
According to the report, 18 of the EU's 27 countries hit record highs of photovoltaic power generation this summer, especially the Netherlands, Germany and Spain, whose photovoltaic power generation accounted for 23%, 19% and 17% of the country's total electricity production, respectively. On the other hand, the proportion of photovoltaic power generation in France during the same period was only 7.7%, which was lower than the European average.
According to data provided by the European Association of Electricity Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E), the think tank said that the photovoltaic industry in Poland has grown the fastest since 2018, with a 26-fold increase in photovoltaic panel production; followed by Finland and Hungary, with an increase in photovoltaic panel production 5 times.
At market prices in August, the EU would have to spend 29 billion euros to buy an additional 20 billion cubic meters of natural gas without photovoltaics. However, the pace of development of the photovoltaic industry needs to be further accelerated. According to the estimates of the think tank, there will still be a shortfall of nearly half of Europe's photovoltaic power generation in the next few years from the electricity production required to achieve the EU's 2030 climate goals.
