In 2022, large German energy storage capacity increased by 910%to 434MW/467MWH

In today's global, energy storage technology is considered an indispensable part of solving energy transformation. As one of the European energy giants in Europe, Germany has actively promoted the development of energy storage technology in recent years.

At present, in the German energy storage market, large -scale energy storage (over 1000MWh energy storage projects) has a significant growth rate, but it is still household energy storage.

According to RWTH AACHEN Technical University and other institutions, in 2021, large German energy storage capacity was only 36MW/32MWH. In 2022, this number increased by 910%to 434MW/467MWH.

However, as far as market share is concerned, household energy storage is still the main force of the market. In 2021, a total of 145,000 household energy storage systems were installed in Germany, with a total installed capacity of 739MW/1268MWH; in 2022, this number increased to 200,000 houses, with a total capacity of 1164MW/1944MWH.

Compared with households with energy storage and large energy storage, industrial and commercial energy storage market share accounted for relatively low. In 2022, the installation capacity was only 43MW/84MWh, and less than one -25 -fifths of the energy storage capacity of the household.

Focusing on large German energy storage, Germany's large -scale energy storage projects are smaller than large -scale energy storage system projects in other mature markets. At present, about 77%of Germany's large reserve projects are less than 10mWh.

Generally speaking, as of the end of 2022, the total number of large energy storage projects in Germany was 149, and the total installed machine volume was 1072MW/1204MWH. However, from the publicly announced project, the installation volume of large German large -scale energy storage projects in the next two to three years can also add 1123MW/1414MWH.

The application of large -scale energy storage systems in Germany is also evolving. Auxiliary services are still the main application areas, and about 658MW/750MWH have been built so far.

Prior to 2019, almost all large energy storage systems in Germany were specially used for frequency control reserves (FCR). Due to the market's saturation, the market slowly slowed down in 2021.

At present, the German FCR market demand has increased. At the same time, Germany's recently launched automatic frequency restoration reserves (AFRR) market is expected to be three to four times larger than the FCR. The FCR market and AFRR market are superimposed. Large storage has ushered in new development opportunities.

Other application scenarios in Germany also include 50MW/50MWH large energy storage system running in large industrial places, as well as a small part of the use of electric vehicle charging stations.

In addition, the "Gridbooster" project of German transmission system operators (TSO), the use of energy storage as a transmission asset, has attracted the attention of the global energy storage industry.

The total capacity of these pilot projects is 450 MW/450 MWh, including the 250MW contract awarded by TSO Transnet to global technology provider Fluice. These projects are expected to be put into operation in the next three years, and as a power grid management resources will be its only application.
