In the first quarter of 2023, Texas added 498.6MW of energy storage systems, accounting for 70% of the US energy storage market

According to research institutions, in the first quarter of this year, the United States deployed approximately 710MW battery energy storage systems, of which approximately 70% were deployed in the ERCOT market located in Texas.

The company stated that by the first quarter of 2023, the installed capacity of battery energy storage systems deployed in the United States will increase to 10.777GW.

The growth of energy storage systems deployed in the United States should be faster. The initial planned project for production in the first quarter of this year was a 2.448GW energy storage project, while the actual production was a 710MW energy storage project.

Delayed deployment of battery energy storage projects is common worldwide, mainly due to delays related to waiting for grid connection and supply chain.

In the ERCOT market in Texas, approximately 498.6MW of battery energy storage systems have been deployed, just over 70% of the 710MW deployed in the United States in the first quarter. The Western Power Coordination Commission's grid covers the western region of the United States, including California, with a 115MW energy storage system connected to the grid, accounting for 17% of the total installed capacity.

As of the first quarter of this year, California (especially the power grid operated by independent system operators in California) currently owns and operates 5.2GW of energy storage systems, accounting for 48.2% of the total installed capacity in the United States, while ERCOT owns and operates 3.287GW of energy storage systems, with a market share of 30.5%. Calculated by energy storage capacity, the share of independent system operators in California is even larger, accounting for two-thirds.

It is expected that 3.177GW of energy storage projects will be put into operation in the United States in the second quarter of this year, of which 51% will be in the California independent system operator grid, with ERCOT accounting for only 6.3%, of which 200MW will be put into operation.
