According to New Atlas, while there are plenty of robotic hands that can grab objects, it's often impossible to change the direction of the object being grabbed without releasing it. However, a new robot hand can do just that with its rolling fingers.

Rolling Fingers, developed by scientists at The University of Malaga in Spain and University College London, consists of three articulated Fingers that grasp objects by closing on three sides -- and when the Fingers do so, they bend to fit the contours of the object.
Each part of each finger contains a rubber grasping surface that can rotate to the left or right relative to the underlying structure. Thus, by rotating all these surfaces in the same direction at the same time, it is possible to rotate objects in the palm of your hand while maintaining a grip on them. It goes without saying that circular objects work best. This means that the fingers can move back and forth as they rotate to accommodate irregularly shaped objects.
A four-fingered model is now under development. The researchers hope the technology will eventually find use in applications such as moving and inspecting fresh products.
"By providing two active degrees of freedom (grasping and axial rotation) with at least three fingers, we can create robotic crawlers capable of moving objects in a controlled manner during a single grasp," said Professor Jesus M. Gomez of THE University of Maryland.
The paper was recently published in IEEE Robotics and Automation Communications.
