According to data released by SNE Research, a South Korean market research institution, in May 2022, the global installed capacity of electric vehicle batteries reached 33.7 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 58.4%, and maintained steady growth for 23 consecutive months. Among them, the Ningde era is the leader. In the environment of slowing growth, the installed capacity of the Ningde era still maintains a growth rate of more than 100%.
In the global electric vehicle battery installed capacity list in May, CATL ranked first with an installed capacity of 11.4 GWh and a market share of 33.9%, and was the only battery company in the world with an installed capacity of more than 10 GWh. Both BYD and LG New Energy have an installed capacity of 4.2 GWh and a market share of 12.5%. However, BYD's installed capacity increased by 171.9% year-on-year, while LG New Energy's installed capacity decreased by 24.8% year-on-year, and was the only battery company in the list whose installed capacity fell year-on-year, and its market share also decreased by 13.9 percentage points, the ranking maintained again The third remains unchanged.
Panasonic's installed capacity was 3.3 GWh, a year-on-year increase of only 3.7%, and its market share also dropped from 15.1% to 9.9%, ranking fourth. The fifth-ranked SK On is the only Korean battery company with a year-on-year increase of more than 100%, but its installed capacity is only 2.2 GWh, and its market share has increased slightly by 1.4 percentage points. Samsung SDI and China Innovation Aviation ranked sixth and seventh respectively. Among them, Samsung SDI still leads with a slight advantage of 0.1 GWh, but China Innovation Aviation’s installed capacity increased by 105.1% year-on-year. In the future, the competition between the two companies Expect more intense.
It is worth noting that in May, LG New Energy, which has been relatively strong in the market, still failed to open the gap with BYD. SNE Research believes that in May, sales of Tesla Model 3 (Configuration | Inquiry) and Model Y equipped with CATL and LG new energy batteries increased, but they still appear to be in the process of recovery. Based on this, the installed capacity of LG New Energy and BYD was the same for the month. But in the future, the installed capacity of LG New Energy is expected to return to the past level soon.
From January to May 2022, the global installed capacity of electric vehicle batteries was 157.4 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 77.3%, maintaining the continuous growth trend since the third quarter of 2020.
Among them, the installed capacity of CATL was 53.3 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 112.1%, accounting for more than one-third of the global installed capacity of electric vehicle batteries, still ranking first. LG's new energy installed capacity increased by only 7.9% year-on-year, making it the battery manufacturer with the lowest year-on-year increase in the list, but maintained its second place. BYD further narrowed the gap with LG New Energy with a year-on-year increase of 210.5%. Its installed capacity is only 3.6 GWh less than that of LG New Energy, and its market share is only 2.3 percentage points less than that of LG New Energy.
Panasonic trailed BYD with a slight gap of 2.5 GWh, and its market share fell by 4.5 percentage points year-on-year, ranking fourth. SK On's installed capacity increased by 131.6% year-on-year, and its market share increased by 1.6 percentage points, ranking fifth.
