Tesla's Q2 2022 deliveries fall quarter-on-quarter

Recently, Tesla announced delivery data for the second quarter of 2022. Due to the blockage of the supply chain, Tesla produced about 258,600 vehicles globally and delivered about 254,700 vehicles in the second quarter, which was not only lower than Tesla's delivery of 310,000 vehicles in the first quarter, but also since the first quarter of 2020. Tesla deliveries fell for the first time month-on-month. Tesla said the company is stepping up capacity expansion to increase delivery speed and meet market demand.

Data shows that in the second quarter of 2022, Tesla produced about 258,600 new energy vehicles worldwide, an increase of 25.3% compared with 206,400 in the same period of 2021; and delivered about 254,700 vehicles, compared with 20.13 in the same period in 2021 10,000 vehicles, an increase of 26.53%.

Among them, the production and delivery of Model 3 and Model Y in the second quarter were about 242,200 and 238,500, respectively, compared with 204,100 and 199,400 in the same period last year; Model S and Model X were in the second quarter. The production volume and delivery volume were about 16,400 and 16,200, respectively, compared with 2,340 and 1,890 in the same period last year.

Due to the blockage of the supply chain, the two new factories in Berlin, Germany and Texas in the United States, which were highly anticipated, did not make much contribution. Tesla’s delivery in the second quarter exceeded the delivery of 310,000 vehicles in the first quarter of 2022, a month-on-month decrease of 17.84 %.

Tesla said its new car factories in Texas and Berlin are causing "billions of dollars in losses" as it struggles to ramp up production due to battery shortages and hampered supplies of battery-making tools.

The decline in Tesla’s deliveries in the second quarter of 2022 will increase overall delivery pressure in the second half of the year. According to statistics, in the first half of 2022, Tesla delivered 564,000 vehicles globally, a year-on-year increase of 46% compared with the 386,200 vehicles delivered in the first half of 2021, but it is only 37.6% away from the overall delivery target of 1.5 million vehicles in 2022. .

Some institutions have recently raised some concerns about Tesla's development prospects. Tesla will continue to grow as electric vehicle sales continue to soar, but its U.S. market share will fall from more than 70% today to around 11% by 2025. By 2025, Tesla's dominance of the U.S. electric vehicle market could be overtaken by GM or Ford as rivals launch 135 new electric vehicles.

Tesla’s previously released 2021 Impact Report showed that by 2030, Tesla’s goal is to sell 20 million electric vehicles per year, compared with 936,200 Tesla sales in 2021. Tesla is trying to ease pressure on its supply chain and accelerate capacity expansion at major factories.

The Shanghai Gigafactory's production capacity has been restored across the board and plans to expand. From January to May 2022, the cumulative delivery of Tesla China is 215,900 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of more than 50%. In April, Tesla's Shanghai plant completed the resumption of work, and its capacity utilization rate has returned to 100% in early June.

In the first quarter of 2022, Tesla's Berlin Gigafactory was officially put into operation, with an annual production capacity of 500,000 vehicles. It is expected to be able to produce 5,000-10,000 Model Y vehicles per week by the end of this year, which is equivalent to the production capacity of the Shanghai factory. On April 7, the Texas factory in the United States opened and put into production. This is the largest of Tesla's four super factories. It is planned to be used for the production of Model Y and the electric pickup Cybertruck.
